First Aid for Seizures

What NOT to do:

  1. Never put anything in the person’s mouth
  2. Never hold down or restrain the person
  3. Never try to give oral medication
  4. Never leave the person on his/her back
  5. Never give artificial respiration, unless the person stops breathing
  6. Never tease someone who has just had a seizure

When to call an ambulance:

  1. If the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes
  2. If there is no medical ID and no known history of seizures
  3. If a second seizure occurs immediately after the first one
  4. If the person does not resume normal breathing after the seizure
  5. If there is obvious injury
  6. If the person is pregnant or has diabetes
  7. If the person requests an ambulance
